National Diabetes Month
This month at Optical World Elsternwick and Optical World Ashburton we’re focusing on raising awareness of Diabetes and the many effects this disease can have on your eye health and vision.
It’s very important that those diagnosed with Diabetes or those that have a hereditary predisposition have their eyes checked regularly by an Optometrist, (ideally once a year). Optical World is a Bulk Billing practice and are confident in assessing the eye health of those that suffer from Diabetes.
Amongst the many complications that can arise from having Diabetes, Diabetic Retinopathy is one. Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by a change in the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina) which can cause these vessels to leak or bleed fluid resulting in vision loss or vision distortion. Early detection is paramount in treating this complication and stopping its progression. Diabetics are also at a higher risk of developing Cataracts and Glaucoma.
Around 700,000 Australians have been diagnosed with Diabetes, and Diabetes Australia estimates that an extra 280 Australians develop some form of Diabetes every day. It’s more important than ever that Australians are actively taking care of their eyes and their overall health.
All our Optometrists at Optical World Elsternwick and Optical World Ashburton are qualified in conducting eye health checks with our advanced equipment such as digital retinal cameras and visual field analyzers. We are also able to conduct a comprehensive dilated eye exam if required. All these eye examinations are covered under Medicare so there is no out of pocket costs to you.
Call us or book an appointment online today to have your eye health assessed by one of our professionals.
