Macular Degeneration is a common eye disorder and the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. Macular Degeneration (also known as AMD), is a slow progressive disorder that affects the central part of our vision, our macular. The macular is located at the back of the eye and is responsible for central, high definition colour vision. When damage occurs to the macular, our vision is greatly impaired with blurred spots or total darkness appearing in the centre of our vision. Macular Degeneration can impact our ability to read, recognise faces, drive a motorised vechicle and do up-close work.

As the damaging effects of Macular Degeneration happen very slowly, it often goes undetected by certain sufferers. That’s why it is very important to visit your local Optometrist for regular eye check-ups so that we may be able to detect AMD in the early stages and offer you immediate forms of treatment to delay any further vision loss.

Macular Degeneration can occur in almost anyone over the age of 50 as it is an age related disorder, however some people are at a higher risk than others. Risk factors include;

– Smoking: Research has shown that smoking can double the risk of Macular Degeneration.

– Family History and Genetics: It’s important to mention any family history of Macular Degeneration to your Optometrist and/or Specialist. Research has found more than 20 genes may be responsible for Macular Degeneration occuring later in life.

– High Fat Diets: Diet has a lot to do with our overall eye health. High Chloesterol is one of the contributing factors that cause the onset of Macular Degeneration.
