Sunday 21st May – Saturday 27th May 2017 is Macular Degeneration Awareness Week in Australia. We at Optical World know just how important it is to have your eyes checked yearly so that Macular Degeneration can be diagnosed in the early stages before it progresses into possible blindness.

The simple truth is that one eye test a year is enough to save your sight.

Macular Degeneration is more common in Australia than you may think. In fact 1 in 7 people over the age of 50 show evidence of early stage Macular Degeneration. There are many different lifestyle and genetic factors that can put you more at risk of developing Macular Degeneration. These include;

• Any individual over the age of 50 – the likelihood of developing Macular Degeneration increases with age.
• Family history of Macular Degeneration – increased risk if a close relative has been diagnosed.
• Smoking.
• Excessive Sun Exposure without the correct UV protection.
• Poor Diet – especially if your diet is lacking in antioxidants and leafy, green vegetables.
